The Secret Life of Roman Cats: The True Guardians of Ephesus

If you’ve ever walked the marble streets of Ephesus, you know that the ruins aren’t exactly empty. While the emperors and gladiators are long gone, their successors remain. They are elegant, stoic, and slightly judgmental. I’m talking, of course, about the Cats of Ephesus.

The Furry Sentinels of the Celsus Library

While tourists from all over the world queue up to photograph the magnificent facade of the Library of Celsus, the local cats couldn’t care less. To them, the 3rd largest library of the ancient world is simply a very expensive sunbed.

You’ll often find a ginger tabby perched on a Corinthian column or a tuxedo cat guarding the Gate of Mazeus. They aren't just stray animals; they are the "spiritual heirs" of the city. In ancient times, cats were highly valued in Mediterranean cities for protecting grain stores and ironically precious library scrolls from mice. Today, they protect the ruins from being too quiet.

A Day in the Life of an Ancient Feline

What does a "Roman" cat do all day? Their schedule is surprisingly packed:

  • 09:00 AM: The Greeting. Position yourself at the Magnesia Gate to welcome the first group of tourists. (Pro tip: Target the ones carrying snacks).

  • 12:00 PM: The Siesta. Find a shady spot under a fig tree near the Terrace Houses. The ancient mosaics are cool against the fur.

  • 03:00 PM: The Photo Op. Strike a majestic pose on the Curetes Way. Wait for the "click" of the camera.

  • Sunset: The Grand Finale. Head to the Great Theatre. As the sun dips, sit on the top row and look over the city like the royalty you are.

Why We Love Them

There is something deeply poetic about seeing a living, breathing creature napping on a 2,000-year-old stone. It bridges the gap between "History" (capital H) and "Life." When you pet a cat in Ephesus, you are touching a lineage that has likely been there since the Byzantine era.

Eda’s Tip: "Don't forget to look down! While you're staring at the grand arches, you might miss a tiny 'lion' sleeping in the shadow of a statue. They don’t care about the history of the Temple of Hadrian, hey just know it’s a great spot for a nap."

Planning to visit?

The cats of Ephesus are generally friendly and well-fed by the local staff and kind visitors. If you want to make a friend, a gentle scratch behind the ears is the universal currency of the city.
